SPRINGFIELD THEATRE CENTRE
ANNOUNCES 61ST SEASON

Front of Theater

As the curtain falls on its 60th anniversary season, the Springfield Theatre Centre is unveiling its lineup for the 2008-09 performance season.
We are pleased to present an eclectic mix of comedy, drama, musicals, family fare, and a special production that will tie in to the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial celebration,” said executive director Bill Bauser, Jr.
The new season was announced at the start of the final performance of “Children of Eden,” the last show of STC’s successful 60th year.  The lineup is as follows:

Thoroughly Modern Millie

October 10-12 and 17-19, 2008

Directed by Edward H. & Leigh Ann Smith

Auditions will be held for Springfield Theatre Centre's production of Throughly Modern Millie, Saturday, August 23, 2008. See the auditions page for more information.

This Tony-Award winning musical, based on the 1967 film of the same name, tells the story of Millie Dillmount, a small-town girl of the 1920s who arrives in New York with dreams of becoming a flapper and marrying for money, but who runs into plenty of trouble along the way.

Steel Magnolias

November 14-16 & 21-23 2008

Directed by Fred Wassell

This off-Broadway hit was later translated into a smash film.  It centers on the trials and tribulations of a group of women in a small town in Louisiana.  Featuring an all-female cast, the play depicts life, love and death with equal parts laughter and tears.

White Rabbit Series - Willy Wonka, Jr.

December 5-7 & 12-14, 2008

Directed by Cari Keysear

The beloved musical is staged in a kid-centric version that loses none of the charm of the original.  Kids and parents alike will revel in this fast-paced, funny production that features beloved songs like “The Candy Man” and “Oompa-Loompa-Doompadee-Do.”

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

January 9-11 & 16-18, 2009

Directed by Bill Bauser, Jr.

Based on the Biblical story of Joseph and his coat of many colors, this Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice collaboration is one of the most popular stage musicals of all-time, with a wide array of musical styles from country to reggae to “the King.”

Our American Cousin

February 6-8 & 13-15, 2009

Directed by Pam Brown

Coinciding with the Lincoln Bicentennial observance, this hilarious and haunting production is an authentic staging of the hit 19th Century comedy about a staid British family whose lives are turned upside down by the arrival of a boorish American relative.  The play assumed its place in American history when it was performed at Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C. in April of 1865, with President Lincoln in the audience.  This STC production will recreate that pivotal union of theatre and history.

The Odd Couple, Female Version

March 13-15 & 20-22, 2009

Directed by Kelly Bassett

The Neil Simon classic not only stands the test of time, it withstands the battle of the sexes.  The mismatched lead duo – Florence Unger and Olive Madison – try to cope with their unorthodox living arrangement, “without driving each other crazy.”

White Rabbit Series - Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

April 17-19 & 24-26, 2009

Directed by Craig Williams

Generations have thrilled to this timeless fairy tale, and a new generation of children will get the thrill of performing it on stage in this all-ages production.

Dessa Rose

May 15-17 & 22-24, 2009

Directed by Laurie O'Brien

To be performed for the first time on the STC stage, this off-Broadway musical is based upon the historical novel of the same name.  Set in 1847, it tells the story of the unlikely friendship between a pregnant runaway slave and a white woman abandoned by her husband on an isolated Alabama farm.  Their story is moving, tragic and inspiring.

The Springfield Theatre Centre is a non-profit community theater organization, which operates out of the Hoogland Center for the Arts in downtown Springfield.  Information on tickets and auditions for the 2008-09 season will be posted at the STC website, www.springfieldtheater.com.
